 Está
localizado en la provincia de Aysén, al sur de Chile, fue
creado en 1967 para proteger un extenso, deshabitado y casi inaccesible
territorio de 1.742.000 ha, destinado a la protección de
la vida silvestre. Aún cuando es el parque más extenso
de la región, más de 400.000 ha corresponden a hielos
milenarios concentrados en la zona denominada Campo de Hielo Norte.
En 1979 fué declarado reserva mundial por la UNESCO. y esta
ubicado en latitud 46 - 45 sur de la Patagonia Chilena.
Este lugar fue descubierto hace cuatro siglos por un navegante español,
convirtiéndose hoy día en una de las bellezas naturales
de Chile de mayor importancia internacional.
Los Hielos del San Rafael datan de más de 300.000 años.
Su frente tiene 2 kms de ancho y sus torres se elevan a más
de 70 mts. de altura y se hunden 230 mts. bajo el nivel del mar.
Su largo es de 15 kms. y su origen es del Nevado San Valentín,
en el Campo de Hielo Sur, de la Cordillera de Los Andes.
El azul de los hielos y sus constantes derrumbes lo han convertido
en toda una tradición internacional, con témpanos
de diferentes tamaños y colores, un espectáculo único
en el mundo.
El clima es húmedo, con una temperatura anual de 8º
C de promedio y precipitaciones que alcanzan, en las zonas de mayor
altura, los 5.000 mm anuales. En los suelos aptos, la vegetación
presenta una densa cobertera de árboles, arbustos y hierbas,
destacando la Flor del Chilco o Fucsia, los grandes Helechos, el
ciprés, lenga, coigüe , tepa, canelo, mañío
Cipreses y el milenario Alerce.
La fauna avícola es abundante y variada, tanto las marítimas
como las terrestres: patos a vapor, cormoranes, cisnes de cuello
negro , martín pescadory caiquén. No ocurre lo mismo
con los peces, limitado su desarrollo por las bajas temperaturas
de las aguas. Los rigores del clima también afectan a los
mamíferos, entre los que cabe destacar zorros, pudúes,
coipos y lobos de mar.
GENERAL INFORMATION (TRIP / PARTICIPANTS )
*About the area:
The area in Patagonia, spacially around the Northern Icefield ,
and in particular around San Rafael Glacier is really very variable
and changes extremely fast.
We can expect many days of rain, sometimes we will be paddling in
windy conditions and breaking waves , aprox.1.5mt (average) , remote
campsites (probably we will have to open camping areas with machetes)
, start the days very early, sometimes at night, in order to avoid
the winds.
 Also
consider that if any emergency the evacuation will be almost impossible
, no hospitals in the area (please read the conditions section).
About water tempetrature.. very cold...rivers coming directly from
glaciers...The cost is covered with dense vegetation and lot´s
of rocks in the shoreline with the exception of few small beaches.
It´s very important that you come with very good gear for
your legs and feet because we will have always to get out of
the kayak and also get in the kayak in the water to protect
the kayaks from the rocks of the shore.
*About the participants:
 Everyone
has to be a real active participant in every step of the trip, be
ready to paddle some days 5-7 hours (20-30 km/day) during aprox
8 days continuously, feel confortable paddling in winds of
15 - 25 knots in 1.5 meter (average) breaking an surfing waves.
Understand that this is an area that rains aprox 5 mt per year so
will rain and rain almost every day so we will be wet...but also
amazing sunny days (sometimes).
Landing spots for setting campsites are very few and they are very
separated ...most of the time bush camping.
This is is a self-supported trip so we will have to travel with
the minimum equipment so we can have space inside the kayaks
for everything considering the lenght of the trip, and BE MEDICALLY
100% .
Everyone must know and be ready to demonstrate different alternatives
of self-rescue and assited rescue before the trip starts
and we requiere to know how to roll (if someone flips while paddling
with waves and in windy conditions, rescue will be extremely hard,
extremely slow or not possible).
Also be confident with bracing strokes and very advisible to have
a wilderness first aid course.
*About the Trip:
Please consider that this is an " exploratory trip " that
means that we know part of the route but there is also a section
that we havent been before. Becasue of that we have study a lot
the area with satellite photos, charts , ask information , send
a float plan to the Navy in advance and have the authorization to
do it.
We will have to deal with expedition behaviour and solve situations
as a group requiring a lot of teambuilding and positive attitude.
It´s extremely required thta particpants undertsand that this
is atrip whre we will have to paddle although is windy , that all
the program can be modified or cancelled at any step according to
the group safety and that means no refunds.
We are not offering a race...and we will "try" to complete
the program of this self-supported trip (no boat with us) . Please
consider that the trip can be modified in any step of the program,
cancell, or just dont arrive to the end if the weather doesnt allow
us to continue in a safe way considering the paddlers experience
required or if the group is on risk and that means no refunds. The
duration of the trip is aproximate....
*About the food:
Will be according to the nature of a self-supported trip in a variable
area (breakfast, trailfood while paddling and a warm dinner consiting
of pasta and sauces).
ITINERARY:
 DAY
1: Meet in Coyhaique city at 4PM and transfer in private vehicle
to Puerto Aysén town, close to Aysen Fjord (1 1/2 hr driving)
. Sleep in private cabañas. Welcome dinner and trip logistics
(D)
DAY 2-12: Eearly breakfast at our cabaña , move to
Puerto Chacabuco town , NAVY check and start paddling Aysén
Fjord - Costa Channel - Tres Cruces Gulf - Elefantes Fjord - San
Rafael Lake and Glacier . The last day undo basecamp and start paddling
to intercept a local fishing boat. (B-T-D). Navigate back to Puerto
Chacabuco town , transfer to our cabañas in Puerto Aysén
and the next day transfer "as a group" to Balmaceda airport.
End of our services
The program and itinerary is aproximately and can be modified
or cancel at any step according to weather , group conditions or
guide decision..

marina, cartas náuticas y tablas de marea.

bilingüe (inglés) , certificado por la British Canoe
Union como BCU 4 STAR SEA AWARD, capacitación en viajes
en kayak de mar con NOLS y curso primeros auxilios Wilderness
First Responder , amplia experiencia en múltiples expediciones
y exploraciones a lo largo de Chile , Instructor Equipos Infantes
de Marina para competencia Ecochallenge 1999 y 2001, Miembro equipo
rescate Ecochallenge Patagonia 1999 , con más de 20 años
de experiencia explorando y guiando grupos en kayak de río
y de mar.

| Requisitos |
|
- Saber nadar y experiencia en kayak de mar avanzada "demostrable"
y en camping en condiciones adversas. Probablemete se requirá
que el primer día cada participante demuestre en
el mar sus maniobras de auto-rescate , rescate d eotros
y técnicas de control del kayak, las cuales si no
son adecuadas al tipo de viaje que realizaremos no permitirán
la participación y no habrá tampoco devolución
alguna.
- Requerida experiencia en expediciones autosuficientes
en kayak de mar .
- EXCELENTE estado salud y estado físico compatible
con la actividad a desarrollar.
- Atenerse estrictamente a las indicaciones del guía
durante la expedición.
- El programa puede modificarse, suspenderse o cancelarse
en cualquiera de sus etapas si las condiciones climáticas
o hechos repentinos, fortuitos pudieran afectar la seguridad
del grupo.

- Actitud mental positiva frente a imponderables ajenos a nuestra
voluntad.
- Comprender que es una actividad a desarrollar en kayak de mar
y al aire libre en que la participación de todos en
cada una de las etapas del viaje es fundamental.
- Comprender que toda actividad inserta en la naturaleza puede
implicar un riesgo incluso la muerte.
- De requerirse ante eventualidad una evacuación esta puede
ser extremadamente lenta inlcuso imposible. Esta es una zona extremadamente
aislada.
- Previo a la actividad entregar firmada la carta Liberación
de Responsabilidad.
- Haber leído y comprendido claramente la sección
Condiciones
Generales.
Nota: Deberemos mencionar
que el éxito de este tipo de viaje está sujeto a imprevistos
tanto climáticos como personales, por lo que el espíritu
aventurero y la buena disposición serán fundamentales.
